Seven-Card Horseshoe

Explore a situation through past, present, hidden influence, obstacle, external influence, advice and possible outcome. These are Prefate’s horseshoe positions; the website keeps them in a readable list rather than arranging the cards into a horseshoe.

Useful for

  • Looking at a transition with both personal and environmental factors
  • Separating an obstacle from the people and circumstances around it
  • Connecting a longer story with a realistic next step

Less useful for

  • Claiming to uncover someone else’s secrets
  • Seeking certainty or replacing professional advice

How to use this spread

  1. Hold one open question in mind, optionally write it down, and review the seven positions before selecting cards.
  2. Connect past and present first. Treat hidden influence as a prompt to investigate, not proof of an unknown fact.
  3. Read obstacle alongside external influence to separate the challenge from its context.
  4. Use advice to consider your options. Read possible outcome conditionally: what might follow if the current direction continues? Record one action and one thing to verify.

Reading example

Illustrative question: ‘How can I settle into a new team?’ With all cards upright: Eight of Pentacles (past), Two of Pentacles (present), The Moon (hidden influence), Five of Wands (obstacle), Three of Pentacles (external influence), Justice (advice), and Six of Swords (possible outcome).

Existing skills meet competing demands. The Moon can invite checking assumptions, not alleging deception. Different working styles may clash, while colleagues offer scope for cooperation. Clear responsibilities and fair agreements could make the transition smoother. Try a conversation about roles and review what actually changes.

Common mistakes

Equating hidden influence with an enemy or secret betrayal.

Confusing the obstacle with the external environment; a challenge and its context are not the same thing.

Ignoring advice and treating the last card as inevitable.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the only horseshoe position order?

No. Follow the seven definitions given here for Prefate’s version and keep them fixed during the draw. The numbered sequence, not the screen shape, determines the reading.

How does it differ from five cards or Celtic Cross?

Five cards focus on the core of one issue, its root and a response. Seven separately explore past, hidden and external influences. The ten-card Celtic Cross adds more perspectives, including conscious aims, self and hopes or fears. Three cards remain useful for a simpler timeline.

Does possible outcome mean a fixed future?

No. Treat it as a possible direction to reflect on. Choices, new information and changing circumstances can alter what happens.
