How to use your free Tarot reading

Prefate gives you a place to draw Tarot cards, explore their meanings and prepare a reading prompt for an AI you already use. Start with the tool above; the steps below explain how to ask a useful question and make sense of the result. You do not need an account, a subscription or a payment to draw cards or copy a prompt.

Tarot is a symbolic practice for entertainment and personal reflection. A card can suggest a perspective to consider, but it cannot establish the future, diagnose a condition or reveal another person's private thoughts. Keep your own judgment and the facts of your situation at the center of the reading.

1. Ask about a choice you can influence

Writing a question is optional. If you choose to write one, focus on a situation and a useful next step: ‘What can I do to improve communication in this relationship?’ gives you more to explore than ‘What are they secretly thinking?’ For work, try ‘What should I consider before changing roles?’ rather than asking a card to guarantee an offer.

Include enough context to understand your question, while leaving out names, contact details and other sensitive information you do not need. If you leave the question empty, the copied prompt contains a reminder to add your own question before sending it to an AI.

2. Choose a spread and draw your cards

A single card keeps attention on one theme or action. Three cards offer a short sequence: past context, the present situation and a possible future direction. The five-card cross explores the issue and its influences; the seven-card horseshoe adds perspectives and advice. The ten-card Celtic Cross is useful when you want to examine several aspects of a complex situation.

More cards create more relationships to interpret, so begin with a small spread when you are learning. Read each card through its position. The same card in a past position and an advice position answers different parts of the question. Upright and reversed meanings are possibilities to consider, not automatic good and bad verdicts.

3. Preview, edit and use your AI prompt

After the draw, select ‘Copy prompt for your AI’ to open an editable preview. Prefate includes your question, spread, positions, card names and upright or reversed orientations. Check that the question says what you mean, edit the text if needed, and use the copy button inside the preview. Then paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another AI you choose.

You can add an instruction such as ‘Explain how each position relates to my question, distinguish observations from assumptions, and suggest two actions I can consider.’ Compare the reply with the card meanings and your real circumstances. If the AI claims certainty about a person or an outcome, ask it to explain its assumptions and treat those claims cautiously.

Questions before you start

Is this reading free?
Yes. Drawing cards and previewing, editing and copying the prompt are free and do not require registration. Prefate's paid AI interpretations are paused. A separate AI service may have its own account, usage limits or fees; copying a prompt here does not purchase a reading there.
Does copying send my question to an AI?
No. The prompt is prepared in your browser, and copying does not call an AI service. You decide whether to paste and send it elsewhere. When you do, that service's privacy policy applies. Your question and drawing state stay in this browser until you reset the reading or clear this site's storage.
Should I keep drawing until I like the result?
Consider writing down what the first draw brought to your attention before repeating it. Repeating the same question can make it harder to distinguish a useful reflection from the answer you hoped to see. You can change your question when you have new information or want to examine a different part of the situation.
Can I use Tarot for an important decision?
Use it as one reflection exercise alongside reliable information, conversation and appropriate professional advice. Tarot and AI interpretations do not replace medical, legal, financial or psychological guidance. You can disagree with a reading and choose a different course of action.
