Major vs Minor Arcana: How the Two Halves of Tarot Work
Understand the different jobs of the Major and Minor Arcana, and learn how to combine them when both appear in one reading.
The short answer
The 22 Major Arcana describe broad archetypes, turning points, and lessons. The 56 Minor Arcana describe how life is moving day to day through action, emotion, thought, work, and relationships. Major does not mean “better,” and Minor does not mean “unimportant.” They simply work at different scales.
Reading the Major Arcana
A Major Arcana card often asks you to step back from the immediate event. The Hermit can frame a period of deliberate withdrawal; Justice can highlight accountability; The Tower can show a structure that can no longer hold. Several Major cards in one spread usually make the reading feel more consequential, but they still do not guarantee fate.
Reading the Minor Arcana
Minor Arcana make a reading concrete. Their four suits locate the activity: Wands for energy and initiative, Cups for emotion and relationship, Swords for thought and conflict, and Pentacles for material life and steady practice. Number and court rank then show how that activity begins, develops, peaks, or takes human form.
When both appear together
Use the Major card as the wider chapter and the Minor cards as the scene. If The Chariot appears with the Eight of Pentacles, a large theme of direction and discipline may be expressed through daily skill-building. If The Lovers appears with the Two of Swords, the deeper issue may be values and choice while the immediate obstacle is avoidance.
A practical reading order
- Name the question and each position in the spread.
- Notice how many cards are Major or Minor.
- Identify repeated suits, numbers, and court ranks.
- Let the positions decide which meaning is relevant.
- Finish with one grounded action rather than a fixed prediction.
